The Blast Door Map - LOST

"Following AH/MDG incident"

This quote from the map has what seems to be an obvious reference to Alvar Hanso (AH). But what does MDG mean? Some have suggested that it could be "M. DeGroot"... we know about Gerald and Karen DeGroot, but who is "M"? Here's another idea of what MDG could mean...

The are eight goals that 191 United Nations member states have agreed to try to achieve by the year 2015 (note the use of the numbers, 8 goals by 2015):
  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  2. Achieve universal primary education
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women
  4. Reduce child mortality
  5. Improve maternal health
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability
  8. Develop a global partnership for development

Goals 4, 5, 6 and 7 seem especially suited to the happenings in LOST...
  • #4 could be related to the reason why the Others are so obsessed with children...are they using the children for research to reduce the child mortality rate?
  • #5 - think about Ethan injecting Claire with who-knows-what in the Staff hatch. Are these injections part of an experiment to reduce the maternal mortality rate, or to improve maternal health and thus improve fetal health, which would, in turn, also reduce the infant mortality rate?
  • #6 could be the reason why we see so many references to the DI vials of vaccine, and the word "QUARANTINE" stenciled on so many doors.
  • #7 could be a reference to the climatization experiments on the Polar bears...

"Stated Goal: Repatriation, Accelerated De-Territorialization of Ursus Maritimus Through Gene Therapy & Extreme Climate Change"

By now, we all know that Ursus Maritimus is the scientific name for the common Polar bear. Here are some thoughts on the scientific experiments that this quote from the blast door map implies:
  • Repatriation (from late Latin repatriare - to restore someone to his homeland) is the process of returning refugees or soldiers to their homes, most notably following a war. Cultural repatriation means to restore or return to the country of birth, citizenship, or origin.
    • Is it possible that the Polar bear was originally a tropical species which the DI intends to eventually restore to their "natural" habitat? If so, for what purpose? This seems unlikely anyway, given the Polar bears' obvious compatibility to the Polar climate (i.e. dense, insulating, white fur that is both extremely warm and makes an excellent camouflage against the snow.) Since time travel now seems part of the story line perhaps it refers to sending bears back to the ice ages. Possibly as protective companions for humans. Bears are easily trained and have been kept as pets. They would make great protectors for anyone in an ice age.
  • Accelerated De-Territorialization: When referring to culture, anthropologists use the term deterritorialized to refer to a weakening of ties between culture and place. This means the removal of cultural subjects and objects from a certain location in space and time. Oftentimes when one culture is changing, it is because another is being reinserted into a different culture. As cultures are uprooted from certain territories, they gain a special meaning in the new territory which they are taken into.
    • The quote states that gene therapy and extreme climate change are being used to deterritorialize the bears, but for what purpose? What "special meaning" will the Polar bears have in the "new territory" of the Island?

"No Connection to Islandwide E.E.P. Network"

What is E.E.P.? Some possibilities:

  • The is applied to several related concepts dealing with gravitation and the uniformity of physical measurements in different frames of reference. E.E.P. states that the outcome of any local non-gravitational experiment in a laboratory moving in an inertial frame of reference is independent of the velocity of the laboratory (the Hatch, perhaps?), or its location in spacetime.
  • (EEP) - In European zoos about 120 species of endangered animals are organized in special breeding programs. These breeding programs keep an account of each species in question and make sure that a genetic variety as large as possible is bred. Is it possible that the DI is either part of the EEP zoological network, or is using similar breeding programs to further species on the Island? Once again time travel may make species extintion reversable.

"Large Number of Underground Springs...Heavy Water Table"

Heavy water is a loose term which usually refers to oxide, D2O or 2H2O. Its physical and chemical properties are somewhat similar to those of water. The hydrogen atoms are of the heavy isotope deuterium, in which the nucleus contains a neutron in addition to the proton found in the nucleus of the hydrogen atom. This isotopic substitution alters the of the hydrogen-oxygen bond in water, altering the physical, chemical, and especially biological properties of the substance to a larger degree than is found in most isotope-substituted chemical compounds. This is fancy way of saying that heavy water is NOT the same as regular water, and it can be poisonous to both humans and animals, because its properties are incompatible with life.
  • Effect of Heavy Water on Animals: Experiments in mice, rats, and dogs have shown that a degree of 25% deuteration causes (sometimes irreversible) sterility, because neither nor can develop. High concentrations of heavy water (90%) rapidly kills fish, tadpoles, flatworms, and drosophila. Mammals such as rats given heavy water to drink die after a week, at a time when their body water approaches about 50% deuteration. The mode of death appears to be the same as that in (such as ) or in acute radiation syndrome, and is due to deuterium's action in generally inhibiting cell division. Deuterium oxide has even been tested as a chemotherapeutic agent, but it seems to offer no advantages. As in chemotherapy, deuterium-poisoned mammals die of a failure of bone marrow (bleeding and infection) and intestinal-barrier functions (diarrhea and fluid loss).
  • Effect on Humans: Accidental or intentional poisoning with heavy water is unlikely, but possible, in an industrialized society. However, on an Island with no purified water source, drinking from a heavy water table could easily be poisonous. It would take a week of drinking nothing but pure heavy water for a human to begin to feel ill, and 10 days to 2 weeks (depending on water intake) for severe poisoning and death. Heavy water poisoning most often results in dizziness and flu-like symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.
  • Implications of Heavy Water on the Island: Are the zoo animals used by the DI to test the impact of the heavy water on the Island? Are they running infertility tests on the animals that have been exposed to heavy water? Are the Others infertile due to heavy water consumption, resulting in inhibited cell division and failure to propagate a healthy fetus? Is this why the Others are so interested in the children on the Island? Did Rousseau's team get sick from drinking heavy water, and she thought they were dying of a disease? Heavy water is used in a number of very safe nuclear reactors among them the CANDU reactor developed in Canada. This suggests that a nuclear reactor may power up whatever is at the heart of the map.

"Liberte te ex Inferis"

This quote from the map is Latin, meaning "Save yourself from Hell." The map shows a hexagon which is 360 degrees around its perimeter. If you assume that the Swan station is ground zero (since the artist of the blast door map is located there) and you travel clockwise around the hexagon, the phrase "save yourself from Hell" is located approximately at the 325th degree on the map. 325 degrees is the heading that Ben told Michael and Walt to sail at, in order to escape the Island. Popular theory has it that the reason no one (including Desmond) can escape the Island is because 325 degrees is the only heading that will break the magnetic hold of the Island and allow you to leave, thus escaping from "Hell." If you fail to sail (swim? fly?) at this heading, like Desmond failed to do, you will eventually find yourself right back at the Island. That assumes of course that the map is of a flat plane however the lines seem to indicate a three dimensional crystal shape which means it may be a 2D reresentation of a 3D or even 4D shape. Time travel would enable them to alter a hellish future

This is also another literary/film reference: In the Science Fiction novel and subsequent movie Event Horizon (1997), the plot hinges around a rescue mission in response to a long lost spaceship that is broadcasting what they at first assume is a distress signal: "Liberte me ex inferis", which would mean "Save me from Hell". As they get closer to the target, though, they realize that it is broadcasting a warning: "Liberte te ex Inferis" or "Save yourself from Hell".

"Primary Nexus of Cerberus Activity"

Found just outside the hexagon, adjacent to the "Save yourself from Hell" notation, this phrase seems to indicate that the so-called Cerberus is seen here most often. In Greek mythology, is called the "demon of the pit" or the monstrous three-headed "hound of ". He guarded the gate to and ensured that the dead could not leave and the living could not enter. Popular theory suggests that Cerberus is the Black Smoke Monster, the strange, ephemoral, mechanical-sounding entity that is responsible for killing the pilot of Oceanic Flight 815, and the beloved Mr. Eko. It is interesting that the highest levels of Cerberus sightings occur at the only known place where anyone can successfully escape from the Island. Is Cerberus "guarding" the entrance/exit to the Island? This is also the location known as "The Dark Territory".

Cerberus by William Blake
Cerberus by William Blake

"Hic sunt dracones"

Latin for "Here be dragons," this phrase is written near the same place that says "primary nexus of Cerberus activity" and could also be a reference to the Cerberus sightings. It is interesting to note that in mythology, Cerberus is sometimes said to have the head of dragon, or as many as 50 dragon heads.
The multiple heads may represent altenate dimentions realities or futures. (It may be a warning about altering the past)

"Here be dragons" is a phrase used to denote dangerous or unexplored territories, in imitation of the infrequent medieval practice of putting sea serpents and other mythological creatures in blank areas. The only known use of this phrase in an actual medieval map was in the Latin form "HC SVNT DRACONES" on the (circa 1503). On this map, the term appeared on the east coast of Asia (some speculate that the Lost Island is located in Asia's Ring of Fire). Many other maps contain a variety of references to mythical and real creatures, but the Lenox Globe is the only one which bears this phrase. Below is a photo of the original Lenox Globe and an artist's rendering that bears this famous phrase.

In another context, software programmers sometimes use "here be dragons" to indicate especially difficult or obscure sections of code in a program so that others do not tamper with them.

"Known final resting place of Magnus Hanso/Black Rock"

We all know that the "Black Rock" is the slave ship that Rousseau discovered beached in the jungle. Magnus Hanso is undoubtedly linked to Alvar Hanso somehow. A possible relative? Or just another hidden literary reference? "Magnus" may be a veiled reference to The Magus, a 1965 novel about a man stranded on a deserted island who gets sucked into the mind-bending "Godgame" of a mysterious recluse (source: Magnus is also a term for magician. One that may be aplicable is Simeon Magnus one of Christs diciples who was perported to be able to perform feats that were considered impossible. He may be the same Simeon Peter who founded the Catholic Church.

"Activity Unsuitable for D.I.H.G." and "Relation to D.I.H.G. Unknown"

As reveled in The Lost Experience, we know that DHARMA Initiative is an acronym for Department of Heuristics And Research on Material Applications Initiative.(Incidentally, is a replicable method or approach for directing one's attention in learning, discovery, or problem-solving. It is originally derived from the Greek "heurisko", which means "I find" or "I have found it!" But what does D.I.H.G. mean?
  • It is likely that the D.I.H.G. is Dharma Initiative
    Hanso Group.
  • So what does the H.G. stand for? Heuristics Group? Unlikely, since Hueristics is already included in the Dharma name and would be unnecessarily repetitive.
  • What about Human Genome?
  • Could it be a hidden literary reference to the great sci-fi author Wells wrote and , an 1896 novel addressing ideas of society and community, human nature and identity, religion, Darwinism, eugenics, and the dangers of unchecked and irresponsible scientific research.
    • is a social philosophy which advocates the improvement of human hereditary traits through various forms of intervention. The purported goals have variously been to create healthier, more intelligent people, save society's resources, and lessen human suffering. Is eugenics the purpose of the D.I.H.G.?
    • "Site of HD delegation inspection" indicate the HD portion is used independantly of the darma group or as a short form.
One of the dangers of altering the past might be the loss of great discoveries such as the human genome project or time travel Dharma may have originally been established to protect such important dicoveries from permanent loss by reintroducing them into society when it is ready for them.

"Mountainous Terrain most likely used by D.I.H.G. for Meteorological Research due to..."

There's that acronym again. And "due to....." what? is the interdisciplinary scientific study of the atmosphere that focuses on weather processes and forecasting. That begs the question, why does the D.I.H.G. want to do meteorological research? Do the Island's magnetic properties have an effect on the atmosphere and the weather? Is D.I.H.G. trying to control the weather?

"High potential for R. VS."

The VS of an aircraft is the , which refers to the at which a occurs. This speed is specific to the aircraft model and depends upon the weight and balance of the aircraft. The true stall speed increases as decreases. Could atmospheric anomalies be the reason that Oceanic Flight 815, the Smiley-Faced Balloon and the Nigerian drug plane crashed? Is there a decrease in atmospheric pressure in this area that causes a higher potential for VS and therefore a crash? Are these anomalies the reason that D.I.H.G. may be studying meteorology?

"Geological Composition likely to cause Magnetic Interference with Weather Project"

Here we have more references to the magnetic properties of the Island, as well as references to the meteorological studies. Perhaps some form of the word "geological" makes up the "G" in D.I.H.G.? Are magnetic interferences partially responsible for the plane crashes? What is the geological composition of this area that causes the problem? Could it be high concentrations of metal?

"X4, Y8, Z15"

Aside from the obvious references to Hurley's Numbers, these are also airline codes. Z4 is also a reference to the first computer in the world to actually be sold, in 1950.
X, Y, and Z also are commonly used to describe a location in 3D space. These numbers could reference a location on the island, but are pretty much useless without an origin, direction, and units. Once again this may indicate a 3D nature to the map.

"Cogito, ergo doleo"

Latin for "I think, therefore I suffer", this phrase is a play off "cogito, ergo sum." This phrase, meaning "I think, therefore I am," was coined by philosopher , in his literary work (1637), which became a foundational element of . Descartes writes that in his belief in his own existence he finds it is impossible to doubt that he exists. Even if there were a deceiving god, his belief in his own existence would be secure, for how could he be deceived unless he existed in order to be deceived? A quote from his writing:

"But I have convinced myself that there is absolutely nothing in the world, no sky, no earth, no minds, no bodies. Does it now follow that I too do not exist? No: if I convinced myself of something [or thought anything at all] then I certainly existed. But there is a deceiver of supreme power and cunning who is deliberately and constantly deceiving me. In that case I too undoubtedly exist, if he is deceiving me; and let him deceive me as much as he can, he will never bring it about that I am nothing so long as I think that I am something. So, after considering everything very thoroughly, I must finally conclude that the proposition, I am, I exist, is necessarily true whenever it is put forward by me or conceived in my mind."
There are three important notes to keep in mind here. First, he only claims the certainty of his own existence from the first-person point of view — he has not proved the existence of other minds at this point. This is something that has to be thought through by each of us for ourselves, as we follow the course of the meditations. Second, he is not saying that his existence is necessary; he is saying that if he's thinking, then necessarily he exists. Third, this proposition "I am, I exist" is held true not based on a deduction (as mentioned above) nor on empirical induction, but on the clarity and self-evidence of the proposition.

From this, we can deduct that "I think, therefore I suffer" must be the blast map artist's way of telling us that "Because I exist, it naturally follows that I must also suffer." In short, life in itself equates to suffering.

"Sursum corda"

The Sursum Corda (Latin for "Lift up your hearts") is the opening dialogue to the Preface of the in the ancient liturgies of the Christian Church, dating back to at least the sixth century AD. While there are some minor deviations in English, the dialogue typically runs as follows:
  • Priest: The Lord be with you.
  • People: And also with you.
  • Priest: Lift up your hearts.
  • People: We lift them to the Lord.
The dialogue is recorded in the earliest missals of the Christian Church, and is a standard element in Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, United Methodist, and other denominations.

It is interesting that this phrase is listed on the blast door map three times. The number three is often considered to have Holy connotations (i.e. The Holy Trinity).

This phrase also appears at the northernmost point of the blast door map, and is eerily reminiscent of the phrase revealed on Mr. Eko's so-called "" in Episode 3x06 ("I Do"). After Mr. Eko's death, Locke retrieved the stick to use as a marker for Mr. Eko's grave. As he was pounding the stick into the ground, he was surprised to notice the inscription "Lift up your eyes and look north". This phrase is found at two places within the Holy Bible: and . Interestingly, Mr. Eko's stick says this phrase is from John 3:05, but it is not. says: "Jesus answered, 'I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.'"

One Last Thing:
The blast door map looks very similar to Ba-Gua, an energy map based on the concepts of Yin-Yang, the 8 Trigrams of the I-Ching and the theory of the Five Elements. It is a mystical representation of all of the various combinations of Yin-Yang energy

The purpose of the DHARMA Initiative is to change them altering the end of the world. Thomas Mittelwerk says they have not changed the values , as the equation continues with the same six numbers. Assming the most recent calculation of the equation is automatically reflected in the radio transmissions. Rachel Blake also learned that the Hanso Foundation was forcing savants at the Vik Institute in Iceland to run the equation over and over. Somehow, five hieroglyphic symbols were involved in the calculations Armand Zander called them representative, the same hieroglyphs are seen on the countdown timer in the Swan station. The Blast Door Mapthe island is marked as being of "low relevance to Valenzetti-related research activity". references the equation; a zone on

I don't know if someone has already picked up on this, but about the polar bears: the DI might be trying to 're-territorialize' them because of global warming. I just watched that Al Gore movie "An Invonvenient Truth", and apparently because the ice is melting at such a massive and rapid pace, polar bears are actually drowing because they don't have any ice to lay on in between swims. They are having to swim like 60 miles without taking a break. So I was just thinking that the DI might be trying to re-climatize them on the island to save them from dying when the ice is completely gone.

I though this map was and still is the single most interesting mystery. Areas have not been discovered and they need to be. I wonder what the "Arrow Station is?" I think this station would be a weapon development station...just imagine how cool that would be....a room full of advanced dharma weapons that have the capabilities of destroying a continent...I think Locke should discover that station.
